Collagraph

Gary Martin - Head EngagedA Collagraph is a print made from a collaged or textured board.

There are two basic approaches to producing a Collagraph plate, which is made from cardboard.

The first is to work in relief, applying a variety of materials on to the surface of the card. These can include fabrics, string, sandpaper tissue and PVA glue.

The second approach is an intaglio method. By scoring lines into the surface and cutting away layers of card with a scalpel, thereby creating recesses which will hold ink. The finished plate can be sealed with varnish to form a tough, non-absorbent surface prior to prints being taken. The edition size is usually smaller due to the limited life of the cardboard plate.
