Paul Wolterink

I am a graphic designer and printmaker, working across a range of media and I believe that anything can function as a carrier of information.

My vision is based on stripping topics to their core, presenting only their essential information. This creates immediate, clear, bold and often even witty communication.

My screen prints are graphic-based, often driven by type. Solid vibrant colour fields, in primary and fluorescent hues, engage the viewer with what may initially feel like an aesthetic experience, but ultimately unfolds into something more profound, as each work reveals its own story.

My inspiration includes the origins of type, role of typography, the Swiss (typographic) style, Dutch graphic design heritage and 80s/90s pop and art culture. Contrasts and opposites also fascinate me – rural  vs. urban life, for example, as well as topics such as the movement and settlement of people, homeland, the origin of societies and cultures.

I studied traditional hand type and sign writing in The Netherlands (NIMETO Utrecht) and graduated from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) in 1994 with a BA in Graphic Design. I lectured in Graphic Design and Motion Typography at HKU Utrecht and Norwich University of the Arts.
