Artist Statement

Finding patterns and shapes in both manmade and natural objects fascinates me. Where ever I look whether it’s outside my bedroom window at the neighbour’s roof, or looking at beautiful landscapes, I am always looking for the patterns that distinguish one item from another.
I like to recreate these shapes into my artwork thinking about how each object can be represented using different marks. The more varied the patterns and shapes are; the more interesting the picture becomes. I find landscapes and natural elements such as flower and plants suit my style very well.
I predominantly like to work in linocut as it forces me to simplify the image into shapes and colours whilst retaining the essence of the image. Cutting into the lino requires definite decision making, as once a cut has been made there is no going back!
I use a reduction method in most of my work where I work into the same piece of lino for each colour. This means that once the first colour has been printed this limits the amount of prints for each piece. More recently I have been experimenting with linocut and acrylics. I find this gives me more flexibility with the colours I choose.
I love the feel of the lino as I cut it. I almost feel that the lino is a piece of art in itself. But my favourite part of the linocut process is peeling the very first paper off the lino to reveal the image that has been created. Part of the challenge with lino is that you are never exactly sure how the image is going to turn out until you have printed it.
After leaving Norwich School of Art and Design, I taught in a Primary School, as I still do on a part time basis. I found that children have an ability to draw with bold confident lines recreating the world they see it with fresh and innocent eyes. For my most recent work I wanted to recreate these bold confident lines and vibrant colours.
