Artist Statement
Influenced by an early career as a microscopist in scientific research, my images are inspired by the recent advances in genetic engineering. My prints are of imaginary ‘life forms’ displayed as ‘specimens’ or ’objects of curiosity’ to invite speculation on the mystery of nature combined with advances made possible by human ingenuity.
Etching, because of the fine detail produced, is the printmaking process I find of most interest. Since graduating in 2003 from the Norwich School of Art and Design with B.A. Hons. In Fine Art, Printmaking, I have been experimenting with electro-etching copper to promote a process of acid free etching, combined with safe substitutes for traditional grounds. I find an interesting aspect of the electrolytic process is the random production of tone and texture caused by replating etched areas. The accidental factors caused by experimentation lend excitement to my creative process.
