Artist Statement
Initially a watercolourist, which I took up to cure my workaholic tendencies, I decided, late in life, to leave
English teaching and apply to Norwich School of Art and Design. Acceptance on the Foundation led to the Degree and then
to the M.A. in Fine Art. I specialised in printmaking but also did installation work and never entirely forsook
painting.
Within the printmaking sphere I prefer etchings, drypoint and collagraphs, though I occasionally branch out into
monoprints. My most ambitious project was a five foot by six foot print of the northern rivers of Broadland.
My interest lies in myth, particularly Greek, Maori, and Inuit myth, which I try to link with some modern problems -
war, miscegenation, and medical mistakes. However, I combine this with an interest in the landscape and the way we
perceive it. I enter this aspect through long distance walking. I believe every place has its 'spirit'.
I have exhibited in London, Norfolk and Norwich, and teach Art to adults. I have also done literary illustration work
for Anglia Campus Publishing.
