Artist Statement

I developed a passion for etching while studying Fine Art at the Norwich University College of the Arts and since my first year have tried to integrate traditional printing processes with my practice. The ideas behind my work stem from an ongoing interest in childhood themes and a desire to reconnect the viewer with their imagination. In the degree show (2010) I displayed a piece called Woodland that consisted of a cardboard box containing a scene of etched trees. I wanted to demonstrate my appreciation of the etching process while continuing to refer to books, imagination and folklore.
Since finishing university I have been lucky enough to learn the process of mezzotint with guidance from Martin Mitchell.
My latest work is a series of four prints based on the four seasons and continues with previous childhood themes. I have recently been fortunate to gain access to Sarah Wilson and Maria Pavledis‘s workshop in Burgh Next Aylsham. This has allowed me to rediscover hard ground etching and to further my experimentation with copper plate printing.
