Artist Statement
David JonesAll my work, painting, drawing and printmaking are about history. I am interested in the way that evidence of the past is all around us if we look closely enough. Modern streets follow old tracks and many of today’s buildings stand on lines fixed hundreds if not thousands of years ago. Evidence of the past is rarely completely obliterated and even in the most modern development, small clues point to the past. I am particularly interested in architecture and do a lot of topographical and architectural drawing, particularly in sketch books and these drawings provide the information for many of my etchings. In addition to this, many of my prints are about people. They may well depict contemporary life but in fact they are still concerned with history since I am recording what will in time become history.

The work I have done so far is mostly hard ground etching with one or two in soft ground both with the addition of aquatint. Making prints provides me with an extension to my drawing. I really enjoy the process of drawing into the etching ground and all the subsequent processes. It feels similar to my drawing in ink but with the added delight of feeling the needle glide through the waxy texture of the ground.
