Artist Statement

I have been etching since 1999 when I enrolled on a printmaking course at Suffolk College and it still holds a fascination for me. A soft ground drawing combined with aquatint is my preferred method of working and I love the way a sketch can be transformed into an etching. Most of my work is produced using limited coloured inks blended and wiped from the copper or zinc plate and then passed through an etching press.
Trees are a constant passion along with the changing East Anglian coastline, often revisiting an idea to study it in another light or season. When etching becomes too intense I turn to monotypes which allow me to capture a mood in a more liberated way. Etching ink is rolled onto a metal plate and then progressively wiped away using muslin, cloths and fingers to produce a single image.
I belong to Sudbourne Park Printmakers and use their workshops as well as my studio near the Suffolk coast.
