Artist Statement
Chris GambleI have an 1826 Albion Relief Press on which my linocuts are printed. The process I use the most is reduction from a single block of lino. This method limits problems with registration but it means that the whole edition must be printed, each colour in turn, so that the edition is complete at the end of printing the final colour. This tends to make for small editions. I sometimes use blends of colour to create particular effects. Usually the lightest or brightest colour is printed first, but it depends on how much of the block has to be cut away. Large areas of cut away block will produce unintended lines which may not help the image, therefore dark colours sometimes have to be printed at an earlier stage. Each colour takes about half a day to print and one to two days to dry, therefore a six colour print can take a fortnight to produce.

My sources vary. I have compiled sketchbooks over the years, which provide me with good starting points for interpretation into prints. I have also used photographs as source material. I constantly see images in terms of potential prints, using limited colours.
