Artist Statement

Annette Rolston

I studied Fine Art back in the 80’s, then continued on to a Printmaking Master’s degree which developed my ideas from drawings into large colour lithographs. I have since diversified into various intaglio techniques ( the drawn line an important part of my work), in particular combining photopolymer plates with drypoint and collagraph, as well as exploring etching. I continue to make mixed media drawings on paper and paint in acrylic on canvas.

I practice meditation and am interested in metaphysics; hence my imagery comes from within and has been described as having a ‘visionary’ quality. Apropos, I am drawn to folk and primitive art, as well as 20th century ‘visionaries’ such as Cecil Collins and William Blake.

Spherical symbols occur often in my work, alluding to flower heads, seeds, vortexes etc. The symbols in my work refer to nature and the life cycle of conception, birth, blossoming, decay then regeneration.

I regularly teach printmaking and have recently joined forces with fellow printmaker Marilyn Jeffries. We co-teach from my studio at the Art Factory, Norwich, offering popular Saturday workshops to adults.

I also visit schools and run workshops aimed at young people, employing a mobile printing press and covering various print techniques.
